She-Male Fish Talk…Ooh Lala!

Another article from Discovery.com. Seems like there are an inreasing number of male fish out there around the world that are developing female traits. How? They are growing new sex organs and even producing eggs. It was thought that this was because chemicals that get into the water mimic the female hormone estrogen. However, new research has put the blame on chemicals that block the male hormones called androgens. These “anti-androgens” may be the key to why males may be turning into females. This new research has found that there are many of these chemicals in lakes and streams and that it might even affect human health. Seems like this might be a pretty big problem soon. Poor fishes. If it can happen to them it can also happen to us. Uh oh. Keep it tuned.
