Chinese New Year’s Edition
It comes time for another post and this one is about Chinese New Year’s. I was up this morning lying in bed, just waiting for a good time to get out (there never is a good time) and I overheard my mother and father talking. If you don’t know I’m a first generation Asian-American. I can speak Chinese fluently, although I can’t say the same for my sister. She was exposed to the English language at an earlier age than I was, so she stopped speaking altogether. Well, my parents were talking about the traditions and how they should make it proper so that we would remember it. If the Chinese language has already begun fading in our family, what will become of the ancient Chinese traditions, among them Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year is pretty much the pinnacle and most important event in the Chinese tradition and belief system. It signifies one year past, the next to come, wisdom come, and everything new. It’s supposed to be a happy time that you spend eating and talking to family, friends, and all loved ones. However, what I’m worried about is the fading of traditions. What will happen later on along the lines to the Chinese American traditions. Sure, there’ll still be people coming to America, bringing the traditions along with them, but will the Asian-Americans already living in the United States still remember the traditions? If any of you are interested in the traditions of Chinese New Year, there is a wikipedia article with some information. Just food for thought. Gong Hay Fat Choi!
