Green Your Earth Day!

Yes, Earth Day is a-coming everyone. It’s been only a couple of days since Earth Hour, which more or less kicked off the month of April. I’ve already mentioned a bunch of things that you can do for Earth Day, but let’s talk about greening Earth Day while you go celebrate. Travel green and in style for Earth Day! Ready to take a field trip? Yehaw!

1) The easiest way is to teach something. Go out there and if you have the knowledge, make sure you go and teach others. It’s one of the most important things out there. Earth Day started off as a campaign to educate. Let’s keep it that way, but have fun too!

2) Get outside and volunteer. Be proactive. It’s no use sitting inside for Green Day. It’s going to be nice out and everyone is going to be enjoying the festivities and socializing. Why should you sit inside alone? Have a blast!

3) Visit a science museum, zoo, or hands-on museum. It’ll teach you about the natural world and the environment. Have a look at what you’re trying to protect. You’ll probably learn a thing or two. Most museums will be holding special events for the month of April. They’re worth checking out.

4) GO GREEN: You don’t have to do all these things at once, but it helps to get started. You have no idea how good it feels to accomplish a switch. The little things matter and you’ll begin to see it as you proceed. Good luck to you all. For more information on greening your routine, check out Discovery.com’s green guide.

Here is a list of simple things I made about 3 years back, but they still apply:

1) CUT YOUR CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS
2) Don’t fly, take the train instead, or limit your number of flights.
3) Buy an energy efficient car, a hybrid, or electric car. If you must drive, try to carpool. Taking these steps will reduce your carbon footstep drastically.
4) Bike, walk, or take public transit! It’s good for your body and it’s good for the planet!
5) Replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs.
6) Save over 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide by turning your thermostat down 2 degrees in the winter and up 2 degrees during summer.
7) Clean or replace filters in your furnace and air conditioner.
8) Choose energy efficient appliances
9) Use less hot water
10) Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket
11) Turn off electronics and light when they are not in use.
12) Unplug electronics from the wall when not in use, since they still use energy
13) Only run your washer, dryer, and dishwasher when there is a full load.
14) Plant a tree!
15) Start recycling and composting at home, school, and work.
16) Buy recycled paper products
17) Bring reusable thermoses, cups, and canvas bags to get drinks and groceries.
18) Limit the use of non-reusable paper napkins, plates, bowls and plastic spoons, forks and knives. Instead opt for metal silverware that you can reuse or buy unbleached napkins, and explore alternative one use biodegradeable party supplies such as BAGASSE.
19) Buy locally grown foods and preferably from your local supplier and store, instead of big supermarkets. Reason being supermarkets often look the other way regarding animal and human rights issues.
20) Buy organic foods that have been grown without the use of harmful pesticides and herbicides.
21) Avoid heavily packaged items
22) Eat less meat, especially beef since cows are methane releasing machines. Demand creates supply.
23) Keep your car tuned up if you do drive.
24) Make sure your tires are properly inflated WEEKLY. Proper inflation can improve mileage by 3%!
25) Try to do things electronically. In order to make paper, trees are being cut down and rainforests are vanishing at breakneck speeds. Electricity can be generating in many ways and is a renewable resource, trees take time to mature.
26) Switch over to new types of energy. Try solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, or manual cranking, such as the hand-crank flashlights and radios.
27) Use green biodegradeable and naturally occurring cleaning products, such as ones found on GREENHOME.COM.
28) In general, use less STUFF. Think to yourself, DO I REALLY NEED IT? Half of the time, you decide against it and use your better judgment.
29) Try to start off with one of the above and slowly work your way to more of these as time passes. Everything you do counts! Remember #30 though!
30) Have fun going GREEN!
